Chelsea brought in many new players in the 2017 summer transfer market to strengthen the team. One of the players they brought was Antonio Rudiger.
Chelsea signed Rudiger from AS Roma. The Blues spent 35 million euros to get the German defender's signature.
Chelsea did not waste a lot of money to sign Rudiger. The player became an important player in the Blues defense, especially during the Thomas Tuchel era.
Rudiger made 203 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea. He also managed to win the Europa League and Champions League while playing for the Blues.
If Rudiger had such a good career, what about the other players who also signed for Chelsea that summer? Here is the review.
Willy Caballero
To strengthen the goalkeeper sector, Chelsea brought in Willy Caballero. He was recruited for free after his contract with Manchester City was not renewed.
Caballero only acted as a back-up goalkeeper during his time at Chelsea. The Argentine goalkeeper has only made 38 appearances in various events with the Blues.
For four seasons, Caballero won the Europa League and Champions League. The former Malaga player left the Blues in the summer of 2021 after his contract expired.
Tiemoue Bakayoko
Tiemoue Bakayoko was brought in by Chelsea to strengthen his midfield. The Blues signed Bakayoko from AS Monaco for a fee that reached 40 million euros.
However, Bakayoko's career at Stamford Bridge was a complete failure. The French midfielder did not manage to secure a place in the Chelsea first team.
Bakayoko has even been on loan since 2018, starting from AC Milan, AS Monaco, to Napoli. Bakayoko has so far played 43 times with the Blues.
Alvaro Morata
Alvaro Morata became Chelsea's most expensive purchase in the summer of 2017. The Spanish striker was bought from Real Madrid for a fee of 66 million euros.
Unfortunately, Morata actually appeared sluggish after joining Chelsea. Morata recorded only 24 goals from 72 matches in various competitions with the Blues.
In the summer of 2019, Morata was loaned to Atletico Madrid before being made permanent by the Spanish club. During his two seasons at Stamford Bridge, Morata won just one FA Cup.
Davide Zappacosta
Chelsea bought Davide Zappacosta from Torino for 25 million euros. However, Zappacosta's career at Stamford Bridge is arguably not going well.
Zappacosta did not get a place in Chelsea's main squad. As a result, the 30-year-old player spent time on loan at AS Roma and Genoa.
Zappacosta finally left Chelsea in the summer transfer window of 2021. The player returned to Italy by joining his former club Atalanta.
Danny Drinkwater
Danny Drinkwater put in a very impressive performance for Leicester City. That made Chelsea recruit him to Stamford Bridge for a fee of 37.9 million euros.
However, Drinkwater was unable to become a regular after joining Chelsea. As a result, Drinkwater was loaned out to various clubs, including Burnley, Aston Villa, Kasimpasa and Reading.
Drinkwater finally left Chelsea in the summer of 2022 after his contract expired. The England midfielder has only made 23 appearances in all competitions for the Blues.
